Pictured here are Paul and Linda Roy (on the right) with friends Mary Jane & Stephen Lenhardt enjoying a recent concert at ZUMIX’s Jazz at the Firehouse. The featured performer was Marshall Wood Quartet with Donna Byrne.
Next up 6/1 is the Greg Hopkins Nonet. This dynamic, brilliant-sounding mini-big band featuring some of the best faculty musicians at Berklee and is led by iconic composer/trumpet player Hopkins. Among the many stellar credits in Hopkins’s international career are performances with Tony Bennett and many other jazz greats, arranging for RCA records, music director for the Buddy Rich band, and appearances at the Newport and Monterey jazz festivals.
The series concludes on June 15th with Paul Broadnax Trio with Eula Lawrence. The child of two well-known and influential Boston-area classical musicians, Mr. Broadnax was appreciating and performing music at an early age. His mother, Ellastine Lee Broadnax, was a legendary vocal and piano teacher. His school chums included Roy Haynes, Ray Perry, Alan Dawson, and other notables. Boston, at that time, resonated with the sound of jazz. Known for his "King Thing" (Nat Cole's singing and playing), and the powerful influence of Joe Williams, he continues to perform around New England and beyond. Twice nominated for the Boston Music Awards Jazz Singer of the Year, and chosen in 2003 as Musician of the Year by the Boston Musicians' Association.
