Why clean rain gutters in the spring?

This is a good idea, especially if the winter brought with it wind, rain or snow.  Clearing your gutters will prepare them for any heavy rainfall that tends to occur during the spring season.    When rain gutters become clogged, water will be unable to be properly diverted away from your home.   This can result in water accumulating too close to your home and that can lead to issues such as foundation damage, structural issues, mold, mildew, and basement flooding.

Why wash the exterior windows of your home in the spring?

Spring is a great time to wash exterior windows.  Dirt and grime from fall leaves and winter storms can block precious sunlight and obstruct views.  Spring is the perfect time to start fresh with clean windows.

Why is it important to change out your air filters in the spring?

According to Consumer Reports,  the air filter helps keep the entire central air system humming along.  A dirty filter can restrict airflow, preventing the system from working as it is supposed to, and possibly leading to equipment breakdown.  Change filters in your air conditioner vents, range filter and water filter, if needed.

You should change your air vent filters not just in the spring, but every three to six months, and more frequently if you have pets.  Water filter replacement schedules will vary, so check your brand's website for details.

Why should you clean faucets and shower heads?

While you are getting yourself clean in the shower, believe it or not, unpleasant stuff builds up in those same faucet and shower heads.  According to WebMd.com, bacteria thrive in showerheads and water distribution systems.  Although most of it is harmless, some can cause lung infections.

How does one clean faucets and showerheads?  Unscrew the faucet aerator or showerhead and clean or replace, if necessary. Soak the heads for an hour and then rinse with warm water.

Why it is important to clean out your dryer vent?

You should clean the dryer lint trap regularly as this allows more air to flow out the exhaust vent and allows for efficient operation of your dryer.

Many people overlook the vent in the back, which can become a fire hazard. You can enlist an insured contractor to remove the lint out or you can try it yourself.  According to HomeDepot.com, move the dryer from the way from the wall and disconnect the dryer vent hose from the vent.  Clean the hose using dryer vent brush, which you can pick up at any home-improvement store. Go outside, remove the cover from the dryer vent and remove all the lint with the brush. Check that the vent cover flap moves freely.

Get a head start preventing springtime allergies around the home

Spring is a common time for allergy sufferers.  If someone in your household suffers from allergies, declutter your home to keep dust, mold and pollen at bay. Make a regular habit of dusting, and consider installing filters in air conditioner vents that are designed to especially filter out dust and pollens.

This is just a partial list of things you can consider to prepare your house for spring.  If all this talk about your home has you thinking about whether or not your home insurance needs a spring check-up, we're here to help, you can request a quote here.
